What to Look for in a Reclaimed Wood Dining Table Set

Knowing what to look for is the difference between a purchase you'll treasure and one you'll regret.

Here's what actually matters when you're buying a reclaimed wood dining table set.

1. Is It Solid Wood Throughout?

This is the most important question. Many ‘reclaimed wood’ products use a thin veneer of reclaimed timber over an MDF or chipboard core. This looks fine initially but won't age well, can't be sanded and refinished, and will deteriorate significantly faster than solid wood.

2. How Is the Top Constructed?

A solid wood tabletop is typically made from multiple boards joined together. The quality of this joinery matters enormously. Look for:

  • Tight, consistent joins with no visible gaps
  • Biscuit or dowel joinery for structural integrity
  • Proper sanding and finishing across the entire surface

A well-constructed tabletop will be flat, stable, and smooth to the touch. A poorly constructed one will have visible gaps, uneven surfaces, and will likely warp over time.

3. What Are the Legs Made From?

Leg quality is often where corners are cut. Solid steel hairpin legs, properly welded and powder-coated, will last indefinitely. Cheap pressed-steel legs will flex, rust, and loosen over time.

Similarly, solid wood legs should be properly mortise-and-tenon jointed or bolted with heavy-duty hardware – not just screwed in with a few wood screws.

4. Does the Bench Match the Table?

In a dining table set, the bench should be designed and built to complement the table – not just thrown together as an afterthought. Check that:

  • The bench height (typically 45–48cm) is appropriate for the table height (typically 75–76cm)
  • The bench length allows comfortable seating without overhang
  • The finish and timber match or complement the table

5. Is It Made to Order?

A made-to-order dining table set means you get exactly the dimensions you need, in the finish you want. This is almost always preferable to a standard-size set that may not fit your room or your aesthetic.
