How to Measure Your Room for a Dining Table (UK Guide)
Buying a dining table without measuring properly is one of the most common — and most avoidable — furniture mistakes. Here's exactly how to do it right.
Step 1: Measure the Room
Start with the full dimensions of your dining space. Note the length and width, and mark any obstacles: radiators, doors that swing into the room, bay windows, kitchen islands. These all affect how much usable space you actually have.
Step 2: Allow for Chair Clearance
This is the step most people skip. You need at least 90cm between the edge of the table and the nearest wall or obstacle — enough for a chair to pull out fully and for someone to walk behind a seated person comfortably.
If you're tight on space, consider a bench on one or both sides. Benches tuck fully under the table when not in use, saving 30–40cm of clearance on that side. Our Dining Table Set with Benches is designed exactly for this.
Step 3: Calculate Your Maximum Table Size
Take your room width, subtract 90cm from each side (for chair clearance), and what's left is your maximum table width. Do the same for length.
Example: Room is 380cm long. Subtract 90cm each end = 200cm maximum table length. That comfortably seats 6–8 people.
Step 4: Think About Seating Capacity
As a general guide:
- 120–140cm: 4 people comfortably
- 150–170cm: 4–6 people
- 180–200cm: 6–8 people
- 220cm+: 8–10 people
Allow at least 60cm of table width per person on the long sides, and 45cm at the ends.

Step 5: Consider a Drop Leaf for Tight Spaces
If your calculations leave you with less than 120cm to work with, a drop leaf table is worth serious consideration. It sits compact day-to-day and extends when you need it.

Step 6: Order to Size
