Handmade reclaimed wood L-shaped corner desk with hairpin legs for home office

Corner Desks for Home Offices – Are They Worth It?

Corner desks divide opinion. Some people swear by them; others find them awkward and underused. The truth is that whether a corner desk is worth it depends almost entirely on your room, your workflow, and how the desk is made.

The Case For a Corner Desk

A well-designed corner desk gives you significantly more surface area than a straight desk of equivalent footprint. If you work with multiple monitors, need space for both a computer and physical documents, or simply want room to spread out, an L-shaped layout is hard to beat.

Corner desks also make excellent use of otherwise dead space. The corner of a room is often the least useful area — a corner desk turns it into the most productive.

The Case Against

The problem with most corner desks is the corner itself. In a standard L-shaped desk, the junction point — where the two sections meet — is often awkward to use. It's too far from either side to be a natural working position, and it tends to become a dumping ground for things you're not sure where to put.

The solution is good design. A corner desk with a generous radius at the junction, or one built with a slight angle rather than a strict 90°, is far more usable.

What to Look for in a Corner Desk

  • Depth at the corner: At least 60cm on each arm, ideally 70cm+
  • Consistent height: Both arms should be the same height — obvious, but not always the case with flat-pack
  • Solid construction: The junction point takes a lot of stress; it needs to be properly jointed, not just bolted
  • Cable management: Think about where your cables will run before you buy
