Console Tables – The Unsung Hero of UK Hallways
The First Impression Your Home Makes
Your hallway is the first thing guests see when they walk through your door. It sets the tone for everything that follows. Yet most UK hallways are an afterthought – a coat rack, a pile of shoes, and a bare wall.
A well-chosen console table changes all of that. It gives the hallway a focal point, provides practical storage, and signals that the rest of the home has been thought about with the same care.
What Is a Console Table?
A console table is a narrow, typically tall table designed to sit against a wall. Unlike a dining table or desk, it's not designed to be used from all sides – it's a wall-hugging piece that maximises floor space while providing a surface for keys, post, plants, lamps, and decorative objects.
The key word is narrow. A good console table for a hallway should be no more than 30–40cm deep – deep enough to be useful, shallow enough not to obstruct the flow of the hallway.
Why Reclaimed Wood Works So Well in Hallways
Hallways are high-traffic areas. They take knocks, they get damp from wet coats and umbrellas, and they're often the last part of the house to get decorating attention. Reclaimed wood is ideal for this environment because:
- It's robust – solid timber handles knocks and daily use far better than MDF or chipboard
- It's characterful – the natural grain and texture of reclaimed wood adds warmth to what can otherwise be a cold, functional space
- It ages gracefully – minor marks and scuffs blend into the natural character of the wood rather than standing out as damage

Styling Your Console Table
A console table is most effective when it's styled with intention. A few principles:
- Height variation: Mix a lamp (tall), a plant or vase (medium), and a small decorative object (low) for visual interest
- Practical elements: A small tray for keys and post keeps things organised without looking cluttered
- Mirror above: A mirror above a console table is a classic combination – it bounces light into what is often a dark hallway and makes the space feel larger
Our Console Table
Our Reclaimed Wood Slimline Console Table is designed specifically for UK hallways. At just 30cm deep, it sits neatly against the wall without encroaching on the hallway floor space. The hairpin legs keep it visually light, and the solid reclaimed timber top brings warmth and character to the space.
Available in custom sizes and a range of finishes, it's made to order in our UK workshop with a 2–3 week lead time and free delivery.
