What Makes a Dining Table 'Heirloom Quality'?
"Heirloom quality" gets thrown around a lot in furniture marketing. But what does it actually mean — and how do you tell the difference between a table that will genuinely last generations and one that just looks the part?
Here's what to look for.
1. Solid Wood Throughout
The single biggest indicator of longevity is whether a table is made from solid wood or engineered board. MDF, particleboard, and plywood cores covered in veneer can look convincing in a showroom, but they don't hold up to decades of use. They swell with moisture, chip at the edges, and can't be sanded back and refinished the way solid wood can.
A true heirloom table is solid wood all the way through — top, legs, and any structural elements. Our reclaimed wood dining tables use solid reclaimed pine throughout. No veneers, no hollow cores.
2. Proper Joinery
How a table is put together matters as much as what it's made from. Mass-produced furniture typically uses cam locks and dowels — quick to assemble, but not built for the long term. Traditional joinery — mortise and tenon, through-bolted connections, solid wood corner blocks — creates a structure that gets stronger with age rather than looser.
3. Repairability
An heirloom piece can be repaired, refinished, and restored. A solid wood table that's been scratched or stained can be sanded back and re-waxed. A veneer table that's been damaged is essentially finished. When you're buying a table you want to last 50 years, ask yourself: if something goes wrong in 20 years, can it be fixed?
4. Stable, Dense Timber
Not all solid wood is equal. Fast-grown modern softwood is lighter and more prone to movement than old-growth timber. Reclaimed wood — particularly Victorian-era pine and scaffold board — is denser and more dimensionally stable because it grew slowly over many decades. It's already been through generations of seasonal expansion and contraction. It's not going to surprise you.
5. A Finish That Can Be Maintained
Factory lacquers look great when new but are difficult to repair when they chip or scratch. A hand-applied wax or oil finish can be topped up at home with minimal effort. We finish all our tables with natural wax or oil, which means you can maintain them yourself for the lifetime of the piece.
6. Made by Someone Who Stands Behind It
An heirloom piece comes with accountability. When you buy from a small maker, you know who built it and you can contact them directly if you have questions. That's very different from buying from a brand whose furniture is made in a factory you'll never see.
