The UK Buyer's Guide to Reclaimed Wood Mantels & Fireplace Shelves

A fireplace is already the focal point of a room. The right mantel or fireplace shelf makes it even more so — framing the hearth, providing a surface for display, and adding a layer of warmth and character that a bare chimney breast simply can't match.

Reclaimed wood is one of the best materials you can use for a mantel. Here's everything you need to know before you buy.

Mantelpiece vs Fireplace Shelf: What's the Difference?

The terms are often used interchangeably, but there is a distinction. A mantelpiece typically refers to the full surround — the shelf plus the decorative frame around the fireplace opening. A fireplace shelf (or mantel shelf) is just the horizontal surface above the fire, mounted directly to the chimney breast wall.

We make fireplace shelves — solid reclaimed wood beams or boards mounted above the fireplace, without a full surround. This suits both period properties and modern homes, and it's a much simpler installation than a full mantelpiece.

Why Reclaimed Wood Works So Well

Reclaimed timber has a natural warmth and texture that suits a fireplace setting perfectly. Old-growth pine and oak have a density and character that new timber can't replicate — and the aged appearance of reclaimed wood looks entirely at home above a hearth, whether the fireplace is original Victorian or a modern gas insert.

There's also a pleasing logic to it: reclaimed wood above a fire. Timber that's already survived decades in a previous life, now framing the warmth of a new one.

Sizing Your Mantel Shelf

As a general guide, your mantel shelf should be wider than the fireplace opening by at least 15cm on each side. Depth is typically 15–20cm — enough to display objects without them feeling precarious. Height above the fireplace opening varies, but 12–15cm is a common clearance for gas fires; always check your appliance's installation requirements.

Because our shelves are made to order, you can specify exact dimensions to suit your chimney breast and fireplace opening.

Our Reclaimed Wood Mantel Shelves

We make two styles of fireplace shelf:

  • Rustic Reclaimed Wood Mantelpiece — a chunky, characterful beam-style shelf with visible grain, knots, and natural imperfections. Suits period properties and rustic interiors. Available in our Dark Oak Rustic Mantelpiece finish.
  • Reclaimed Wood Fireplace Mantel with Pre-fitted Fixings — a cleaner profile with concealed fixings pre-installed for easier mounting. Suits both traditional and contemporary interiors. See our Reclaimed Wood Fireplace Mantel.

Installation: What to Know

A fireplace shelf needs to be fixed securely to the chimney breast wall, which is typically solid brick or blockwork. You'll need appropriate fixings for masonry — rawl plugs and screws, or a French cleat system. Our mantel with pre-fitted fixings makes this process more straightforward.

If you're unsure about installation, a local handyman or joiner can typically fit a mantel shelf in under an hour. It's a straightforward job for anyone comfortable with masonry fixings.

Styling Your Mantel Shelf

Less is more on a mantel. A few well-chosen objects — a mirror, a clock, a pair of candlesticks, a plant — look far better than a crowded display. Vary the heights of objects and leave some of the wood surface visible. The timber itself is part of the display.

All our mantel shelves are made to order, finished by hand, and delivered free across the UK. Get in touch to discuss sizing and finish options.
