The Complete Guide to Reclaimed Wood Coffee Tables

A coffee table is one of the hardest-working pieces of furniture in your home. It holds your morning brew, your books, your remote controls, and the occasional pair of feet. It sits at the centre of your living room and sets the tone for the whole space.

Get it right, and it ties everything together. Get it wrong, and it's the first thing you notice every time you walk in.

This guide covers everything you need to know about choosing a reclaimed wood coffee table — from size and style to finish and leg options.

Why Reclaimed Wood Works So Well for Coffee Tables

Coffee tables take a lot of daily use — cups, glasses, books, the odd scratch from a dog's paw. Reclaimed timber, particularly old-growth pine and scaffold board, is dense and hardwearing. It handles daily life better than most modern softwoods, and the natural character of the wood means minor marks and wear only add to the look over time.

There's also the aesthetic. Reclaimed wood has a warmth and texture that no manufactured board can replicate. Paired with industrial metal legs, it creates that rustic-industrial look that works equally well in a period terrace or a modern new-build.

Choosing the Right Size

As a general rule, your coffee table should be roughly two-thirds the length of your sofa, and sit at a similar height to your sofa cushions (typically 40–45cm). Leave at least 45cm of clearance between the table and your sofa so you can move around comfortably.

Because all our coffee tables are made to order, you're not limited to standard sizes. If you need something narrower for a smaller room, or longer to suit a large sectional sofa, we can build to your exact dimensions.

Leg Options: Hairpin vs Solid Wood

We offer two main leg styles for our coffee tables:

Finish Options

We hand-apply all our finishes, which means you can choose the tone that suits your interior:

  • Natural wax — enhances the wood's natural colour with a subtle sheen. Best for lighter, Scandi-inspired rooms.
  • Dark oak — a richer, deeper tone that suits industrial and traditional interiors alike.
  • Antique pine — a warm mid-tone with a slightly aged appearance.

All finishes are food-safe and water-resistant when cured. We recommend re-waxing once or twice a year to keep the surface in top condition.

Styling Your Coffee Table

A reclaimed wood coffee table is a statement piece — it doesn't need much dressing. A few styling tips:

  • Keep accessories minimal: a tray, a candle, a small plant or a stack of books is enough.
  • Mix textures: pair the wood with soft furnishings in linen, wool, or cotton to balance the industrial feel.
  • Let the wood breathe: avoid covering the surface entirely with a tray or runner — the grain and character of the timber is the point.
