Behind the Workshop: A Day in the Life at Eco Wood Projects
People often ask what the process looks like — how a piece of reclaimed timber becomes a dining table or a desk that ends up in someone's home. So here's an honest account of what a typical day in the workshop looks like.
Morning: Timber Assessment
The day usually starts with the timber. Before anything gets cut, every board is assessed — checked for structural integrity, old nails removed, surfaces inspected. Reclaimed wood is unpredictable in the best possible way. Some boards are near-perfect. Others have splits, deep saw marks, or old paint that needs to come off. Part of the craft is reading the timber and deciding what it's best suited for.
A wide, clean board might become the centrepiece of a dining table top. A narrower board with more character might work better as part of a shelf run. Nothing goes to waste.
Mid-Morning: Cutting and Jointing
Once the timber is assessed, it's cut to size. Every order is made to the customer's specified dimensions — so there's no standard template to follow. A dining table for a narrow kitchen might be 160cm x 70cm. A desk for a corner alcove might need to be 140cm wide but only 55cm deep. The cuts are precise, and the jointing — where boards are glued and clamped together to form a wider top — takes time to do properly.
Afternoon: Sanding and Finishing
Sanding is where the character of the wood really comes through. We work through progressively finer grits, taking the surface from rough to smooth while preserving the natural texture — the grain, the subtle undulations, the marks that tell the timber's story. We don't sand everything flat and featureless. That would defeat the point.
Finishing is the final step. We hand-apply wax or oil in multiple coats, buffing between each one. It's slow work, but it's what gives the surface its depth and durability. A well-finished reclaimed wood piece has a warmth that no factory finish can replicate.
End of Day: Quality Check and Dispatch Prep
Before anything leaves the workshop, it's checked. Legs are tested for stability. Surfaces are inspected in raking light to catch any imperfections. Fixings are tightened. Then it's wrapped carefully for transit — we deliver free across the UK, and we take the packaging seriously because a damaged piece on arrival is a failure regardless of how well it was made.
The Lead Time Question
We're often asked why our lead time is around three weeks. This is why. Every piece is made from scratch, to order, by hand. There's no warehouse of finished furniture waiting to be shipped. Your table doesn't exist yet when you order it — it gets made specifically for you, from timber we've assessed and selected for that purpose.
We think that's worth the wait.
